- Der Barbat (arabisch-persisch بربط, DMG barbaṭ, auch persisch بربت, DMG barbat) ist ein historisches gezupftes Lauteninstrument, das spätestens seit der Sassanidenzeit in der Gegend des heutigen Iran belegt ist. Er gehört zu einer Gruppe von Kurzhalslauten mit birnenförmigem Korpus, die um die Zeitenwende in Zentralasien und Nordindien greifbar werden und sich unter verschiedenen Namen bis nach Südarabien und nach Südostasien verbreitet haben. Der bekannteste Abkömmling des barbaṭ ist die arabische Laute ʿūd, dessen rundbauchige Form von einem im 8. Jahrhundert neu entwickelten Lautentyp abstammt.
