Large populations of internally displaced persons have existed and continue to exist in Africa, and these are due to many causes, the most prominent being violence, environmental factors, development and social conflict. Конвенція була прийната у жовтні 2009 року. Станом на 2016 рік документ був підписаний 40 і був ратифікований 25 з 54 держав-членів Африканського Союзу. Конвенція набрала чинності 6 грудня 2012 року, через 30 днів після її ратифікації п'ятнадцятою державою. (uk)
