The 1999 Catalan regional election was held on Sunday, 17 October 1999, to elect the 6th Parliament of the autonomous community of Catalonia. All 135 seats in the Parliament were up for election. The election saw the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC) under former Mayor of Barcelona Pasqual Maragall achieve a razor-thin victory in the popular vote, the first time since 1980 that the Convergence and Union (CiU) alliance of incumbent president Jordi Pujol did not come out in top of voters' preferences. However, as a result of the electoral system, CiU was able to retain first place in terms of seats, and together with the conservative People's Party (PP), secure a small majority of 68 seats in the Parliament of Catalonia, compared to the 67 garnered by the combined total of all three left-

Hubo una participación del 59,20 por ciento. Las elecciones fueron anticipadas dos meses, pues debían haberse celebrado el domingo 19 de diciembre de 1999. El candidato de CiU a la Presidencia de la Generalidad, Jordi Pujol, fue elegido presidente al contar con el apoyo de los votos del Partido Popular en la investidura, en virtud del Pacto del Majestic, firmado por CiU y el PP en 1996 por el que se comprometían a apoyarse mutuamente. Quanto aos resultados eleitorais, o Partido dos Socialistas da Catalunha, pela primeira vez, tornou-se o partido mais votado da Catalunha, ao conquistar 37,9% dos votos. Apesar disto, a Convergência e União continuou a ser o partido com mais deputados no parlamento regional, muito devido às vitórias da CiU nos círculos eleitorais mais pequenos. A Esquerda Republicana da Catalunha também perdeu votos e deputados, conquistando 8,7% e 12 deputados. (pt)
