A Syntopicon: An Index to The Great Ideas (1952; second edition, 1990) is a two-volume index, published as volumes 2 and 3 of Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.’s collection Great Books of the Western World. Compiled by Mortimer J. Adler, an American philosopher, under the guidance of Robert Hutchins, president of the University of Chicago, the volumes were billed as a collection and guide to the most important ideas, clustered under 102 "Great Ideas", of the Western canon. The term “syntopicon” as well as "Great Ideas" were coined specifically for this undertaking, the former a neolatin word meaning “a collection of topics.” The volumes catalogued what Adler and his team deemed to be the fundamental ideas contained in the works of the Great Books of the Western World, which stretched chronolog

  • 시놉티콘(Synopticon)은 파놉티콘(Panopticon)의 반대되는 개념으로 감시에 대한 역감시란 의미이다. 파놉티콘이 자리를 잡았던 19세기, 다수가 소수의 권력자를 감시하는 언론의 발달을 시놉티콘이라 하면서부터 발달하기 시작했다. 정보사회의 발전에 의해 파놉티콘 체제의 일방적 감시는 시놉티콘으로 바뀌어 가고 있다. 노르웨이의 범죄학자 토마스 매티슨은 언론과 통신을 통해 다수가 소수의 권력자를 감시할 수 있는 체제로 발달했다고 주장하면서, 이러한 권력 감시를 시놉티콘(synopticon)이라는 이름을 붙였다. 정보화 시대가 도래하면서 인터넷은 시놉티콘을 가능하게 하였다. 사회에서 일어나는 일에 대한 비판적인 의식의 교류, 부정적인 현실의 고발, 중요사안에 관한 의견 결합 등 네티즌들의 조사로 권력자들을 감시하는 역발상 체제가 바로 이것에 해당한다. 시놉티콘에 크게 기여한 것은 바로 인터넷의 익명성이다. 권력자에게 쉽게 말할 수 없는 내용들을 서로 익명 체제 하에 교류하고 투합할 수 있게 되었기 때문이다.
