The Atlas method is a method used by the World Bank since 1993 to estimate the size of economies in terms of gross national income (GNI) in U.S. dollars. A country's GNI in local (national) currency is converted into U.S. dollars using the Atlas conversion factor, which uses a three-year average of exchange rates to smooth effects of transitory exchange rate fluctuations, adjusted for the difference between the rate of inflation in the country (using the country's GDP deflator), and that in a number of developed countries (using a weighted average of the countries' GDP deflators in SDR terms). The resulting GNI in U.S. dollars is divided by the country's midyear population to obtain the GNI per capita.

Er wordt hierbij gebruik gemaakt van een driejarig gemiddelde om het effect van wisselkoersfluctuaties in een jaar reduceren en daarmee de internationale vergelijkbaarheid te verbeteren. Van een land wordt de bni in nationale valuta omgerekend in Amerikaanse dollars met behulp van de Atlas-conversiefactor. Deze factor is een driejarig gemiddelde van de wisselkoersen, gecorrigeerd voor het verschil in inflatie. Deze inflatiecorrectie wordt gedaan om het effect van andere zaken op de wisselkoers te reduceren. Voor de inflatie wordt de bbp-deflator gebruikt. Deze wordt berekend door het nominaal bruto binnenlands product (bbp) te delen door het reëel bbp. De wereldinflatie is een gewogen gemiddelde van de bbp-deflatoren van de landen die deel uitmaken van de SDR: de Volksrepubliek China, Japan, de Verenigde Staten en de landen die deel uitmaken van de eurozone.
