Bio Suisse is the main organisation of organic agriculture in Switzerland. This umbrella organization counts 33 organic farmers' associations among its members, as well as the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL. It notably manages the guidelines of the organic label "Bio Suisse". It was founded in 1981 and, as federation of the Swiss organic farmers, represents the interest of about 7,500 agricultural businesses (regularly inspected by independent bodies). It also certifies more than 1200 processing companies.

Mitglieder sind 7216 Bio-Betriebe aus der Schweiz und dem Fürstentum Liechtenstein, die in 33 regionalen Mitgliedorganisationen organisiert sind, darunter die fünf Gründungsorganisationen der Vorgängerorganisation. Die Delegiertenversammlung besteht aus 102 Delegierten der 33 Mitgliedorganisationen und ist das oberste Organ von Bio Suisse. Elle compte environ 7 500 membres producteurs bio et regroupe ainsi environ 90 pour cent des fermes bio de Suisse (état 2018). S’ajoutent à cela dix autres organisations membres, dont les cinq organisations fondatrices Bioterra, Biofarm, Progana, Demeter et FiBL (Institut de recherche de l’agriculture biologique). L’assemblée des délégués est composée de 102 délégués des 33 organisations membres. Elle constitue l’organe suprême de Bio Suisse. En sus, plus de 1 200 entreprises de transformation et de commerce disposent d’une licence et fabriquent ou font le commerce de denrées alimentaires Bourgeon. (fr)

It notably manages the guidelines of the organic label "Bio Suisse". It was founded in 1981 and, as federation of the Swiss organic farmers, represents the interest of about 7,500 agricultural businesses (regularly inspected by independent bodies). It also certifies more than 1200 processing companies. The organic label "Bio Suisse" is widely distributed in Switzerland, for instance through organic food shops, farmers markets and the largest supermarkets chains: Coop Naturaplan (2,500 products) and Migros Bio (raw products with origin Swiss come from Bio Suisse farms). As of 2021, 17 percent of Swiss farms are organic and the organic market in Switzerland share to almost 10 percent. Imports will be permitted only if domestic production is not possible (e.g. coffee), not sufficient (e.g. cereals) from Swiss Bud farmers or has already been sold. The products are processed mainly in Switzerland. Fresh products from overseas are only permitted in exceptional cases (e.g. mangoes or bananas). Vegetables are sourced in Europe and/or from Mediterranean countries, even in winter. Imports by air are prohibited. Nearby foreign countries are preferred for imports. In 2021, over 2’500 farms/producer groups abroad were certified to Bio Suisse regulations. Most of them are located in Europe. Cereals and animal feed are the products most commonly imported in terms of volume. (en)

Der Verband bezweckt die Förderung des biologischen Landbaus als umwelt- und tier- und menschengerechte Anbauweise. Die Vereinigung fördert Angebot und Nachfrage nach Produkten insbesondere aus Schweizer Produktion. Zu den wichtigsten Aufgaben der Geschäftsstelle gehört die Weiterentwicklung der Richtlinien, die Markttransparenz und Marktentwicklung, übergeordnete Aufgaben in der Qualitätssicherung, die Prüfung von Lizenzgesuchen und die Beratung der lizenzierten Verarbeiter und Händler sowie die Interessensvertretung ihrer Mitglieder am Markt, in der Politik und in der Öffentlichkeit. Die Geschäftsstelle mit rund 90 Mitarbeitenden befindet sich in Basel. Mit der Antenne Romande betreibt Bio Suisse in Lausanne eine Aussenstelle. Seit 2018 ist Balz Strasser Geschäftsführer. (de)
