Il est l'auteur de On Growth and Form (1917, révisée en 1942) traduit en français sous le titre Forme et croissance, qui fit de lui le premier biomathématicien. - D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson (Edinburgh, 2 mei 1860 - St Andrews, 21 juni 1948) was een Schots bioloog, wiskundige en geleerde op het gebied van de klassieken. Thompson postuleerde de stelling dat de biologen van zijn tijd te veel nadruk legden op de rol van de evolutie, qua invloed op de vorm en structuur van organismes. Hij propageerde dat er meer aandacht moest komen voor de invloed van fysieke natuurwetten en mechanismen daarin, met als alternatief voor survival of the fittest. In 1917 zette Thompson zijn ideeën daarover uiteen in het boek On Growth and Form. (nl)

- Sir D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson CB FRS FRSE (2 May 1860 – 21 June 1948) was a Scottish biologist, mathematician and classics scholar. He was a pioneer of mathematical and theoretical biology, travelled on expeditions to the Bering Strait and held the position of Professor of Natural History at University College, Dundee for 32 years, then at St Andrews for 31 years. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, was knighted, and received the Darwin Medal and the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal. (en)
