Nascido em Plymouth no condado de Devon, Lockyer era filho de Thomas Lockyer, um marinheiro, e de sua esposa Ann, née Grose. Lockyer começou sua carreira militar como alferes no 19º regimento em junho de 1803, foi promovido a tenente no início de 1805 e tornou-se capitão em agosto de 1805. Lockyer foi promovido a major em agosto de 1819 e em agosto de 1824 transferido para o 57º regimento. Lockyer chegou a Sydney, capital da Colônia Britânica de Nova Gales do Sul, a bordo do Royal Charlotte em abril de 1825 com homens do 57º regimento, e também com sua esposa e dez filhos. (pt)
- Edmund Lockyer, (21 January 1784 – 10 June 1860) was a British soldier and explorer of Australia. Born in Plymouth, Devon, Lockyer was the son of Thomas Lockyer, a sailmaker, and his wife Ann. Lockyer began his army career as an ensign in the 19th Regiment in June 1803, was promoted lieutenant in early 1805 and made captain in August 1805. Lockyer was promoted to major in August 1819 and in August 1824 transferred to the 57th Regiment. Lockyer arrived at Sydney, capital of the British Colony of New South Wales, aboard the Royal Charlotte in April 1825 with men from the 57th; also with his wife and ten children. (en)
