Protégé au sein du parc national du Grand Canyon, cet établissement ouvert en 1905 est inscrit au Registre national des lieux historiques depuis le 6 septembre 1974. Propriété contributrice au district historique de Grand Canyon Village, un district historique créé le 20 novembre 1975, il est classé National Historic Landmark depuis le 28 mai 1987. Fue diseñado por Charles Whittlesey, arquitecto jefe del Ferrocarril de Atchison, Topeka y Santa Fe y fue inaugurado en 1905 como parte de una cadena de hoteles y restaurantes propiedad y gestionados por la compañía Fred Harvey junto con el ferrocarril de Santa Fe. - The El Tovar Hotel, also known simply as El Tovar, is a former Harvey House hotel situated directly on the south rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, United States. The hotel was designed by Charles Whittlesey, Chief Architect for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway and was opened in 1905 as one of a chain of hotels and restaurants owned and operated by the Fred Harvey Company in conjunction with the Santa Fe railway whose Grand Canyon Depot was 100 metres (330 ft) away. It is at the northern terminus of the Grand Canyon Railway, which was formerly a branch of the Santa Fe. (en)

Hotellet ritades av Charles Whittlesey i vad som kom att kallas "National Park Service Rustic"-stil. Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway hade från början tänkt sig ett litet hotell som granne med den nya järnvägsstationen och, som närmast, drygt sex meter från den södra branten till kanjonen, men El Tovar kom att ursprungligen ha 103 gästrum.
