The International Grenfell Association (IGA) is an organization founded by Sir Wilfred Grenfell to provide health care, education, religious services, and rehabilitation and other social activities to the fisherman and coastal communities in northern Newfoundland and the coast of Labrador. The IGA was incorporated in the Dominion of Newfoundland on January 10, 1914, under the Companies Act of 1899.

Benannt ist sie nach ihrem Gründer Wilfred Grenfell. An der Küste Labradors gab es vor 1892 nur wenige Einrichtungen zur medizinischen Versorgung für die in großen Teilen indigene Bevölkerung. Nur eine Missionsstation der Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine bot medizinische Grundversorgung, gelegentlich kam ein von der neufundländischen Regierung beauftragter Arzt per Postschiff. Grenfell erkannte 1892 auf einer medizinischen Expedition mit einem Hospitalschiff die schlechte medizinische Versorgung sowie die harten Lebensbedingungen der Bevölkerung. Daraufhin baute er ein Netzwerk regionaler Krankenhäuser und Pflegestationen auf. Die ersten Krankenhäuser wurden 1893 in und 1894 in errichtet. Die IGA wurde am 10. Januar 1914 gegründet, als Neufundland noch nicht zu Kanada gehörte. Ihr Netzwerk dehnte sich bis in die 1960er-Jahre auch ins Innere von Labrador aus. Zwischen 1949 und 1979 wurden Tausende indigene Kinder aus ihren Gemeinden entführt und in fünf Internatsschulen untergebracht, die von der International Grenfell Association oder den Herrnhuthern betrieben wurden. Berichtet wird, dass die Kinder dort sexuell und körperlich missbraucht wurden und Sprach- und Kulturverluste erlitten. (de)
- The International Grenfell Association (IGA) is an organization founded by Sir Wilfred Grenfell to provide health care, education, religious services, and rehabilitation and other social activities to the fisherman and coastal communities in northern Newfoundland and the coast of Labrador. Before 1892 there were no medical facilities or personnel along the coast of Labrador aside from a Moravian Mission that provided basic medical care and an occasional doctor that the Newfoundland government sent on a mail ship. Grenfell undertook a medical expedition in 1892 on the hospital ship the Albert. He saw medical and living conditions that appalled him, including settlements that had been wiped out by diphtheria. In response, he developed a network of regional hospitals and nursing stations. The first hospitals were built at Battle Harbour in 1893 and Indian Harbour in 1894. By the 1960s, the network had extended into the interior of Labrador. The IGA was incorporated in the Dominion of Newfoundland on January 10, 1914, under the Companies Act of 1899. In 2017, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologised for the treatment of children who, between 1949 and 1979, were separated from their families and taken to residential schools run by the IGA, where they became victims of sexual and physical abuse.
