They speak the Mixe languages, which are classified in the Mixe–Zoque family, and are more culturally conservative than other indigenous groups of the region, maintaining their language to this day. A population figure of 90,000 speakers of Mixe were estimated by SIL international in 1993. The Mixe name for themselves is ayuujkjä'äy meaning "people who speak the mountain language" The word "Mixe" itself is probably derived from the Nahuatl word for cloud: mīxtli. (en)

Parlano le lingue mixe che sono classificate nella famiglia linguistica delle mixe–zoque, e sono più culturalmente conservativi rispetto agli altri gruppi nativi della regione, mantenendo tuttora la propria lingua. Nel 1993 il SIL International ha stimato che circa 90 000 persone parlano mixe. Il nome che i Mixe danno a se stessi è ayuujkjä'äy, che significa "persone che parlano la lingua della montagna". Il termine "Mixe" probabilmente deriva dal nahuatl "nuvola": mīxtli. (it)
- El pueblo mixe es uno de los pueblos indígenas que habitan en México. También pueden ser reconocidos como los ayuuk ja’ay o el pueblo ayuuk. Este pueblo se ubica al noreste del estado de Oaxaca, aunque un número de ellos están repartidos en todo el país. El 1.8% de la población indígena de México pertenece al pueblo mixe. El área que ocupa la integran 19 municipios, además de algunas agencias municipales en otros 5 municipios. Muchas de las comunidades se ubican en la región conocida como Sierra Mixe y otras más se hallan en el Istmo de Tehuantepec. Son reconocidos por la legislación estatal como parte integrante y que sustenta al estado. (es)
