Aujourd’hui, il se trouve à environ 25 km de l’actuelle rive occidentale du Mississippi, près du village d’Epps, dans la Paroisse de Carroll Ouest. Le nom « Poverty Point » est celui de la plantation sur laquelle fut découvert le site archéologique en 1873. Par extension, la culture de Poverty Point (Poverty Point culture) désigne la culture précolombienne de cette région qui se caractérise par l’aménagement de monticules en terre. Má rozlohu 3,68 km² a skládá se z umělých náspů dosahujících výšky až 185 cm a šířky až 15 m. Šest řad je uspořádáno do pravidelného půlkruhu kolem centrálního prostranství na břehu říčky , poblíž nich se nacházejí další vyvýšeniny, z nichž největší je mohyla A, která má při pohledu z výšky tvar letícího ptáka. Podle radiokarbonové metody datování tyto terénní úpravy proběhly mezi léty 1650 a 700 př. n. l. a jejich účel je předmětem sporů – podle různých teorií zde bylo sídliště, tržiště, pohřebiště nebo svatyně. Poverty Point je největší severoamerickou stavbou z takzvaného archaického období. (cs)
- Poverty Point ist ein archäologischer Fundort im Nordosten des US-Bundesstaates Louisiana nahe der Ortschaft im West Carroll Parish. Auf einem etwa 160 ha großen Gelände befinden sich in Größe und Komplexität einzigartige Erdwerke einer präkolumbischen Indianerkultur. Diese werden auf die Zeit zwischen 18. und 10. Jahrhundert v. Chr. datiert, stammen damit aus dem Ende der Archaischen Periode. Die auffälligsten Erdwerke sind sechs Erdwälle in Form halber konzentrischer Ringe, die mit ihren Enden an den Hangabbruch zu einem Wasserlauf in der Talebene des Mississippi stoßen. Zur Anlage gehören auch mindestens sechs als Mounds bezeichnete künstliche Hügel, innerhalb und außerhalb der Halbringe. (de)
