Das Klonen von Renn- und Sportpferden soll ermöglichen, das Erbgut von kastrierten Pferden an spätere Generationen weiterzugeben. 2005 wurde erstmals ein geklontes Rennpferd geboren. Das Erbmaterial stammt von Pieraz, einem Langstreckenrennpferd. Auch an herkömmlichen Pferderennen dürfen geklonte Pferde teilnehmen. Auch E.T., das Erfolgspferd des Springreiters Hugo Simon, wurde erfolgreich geklont. Das Hengstfohlen wurde 2006 geboren und soll in ein belgisches Zuchtbuch eingetragen werden. Adolfo Cambiaso klonte 2009 sein Polopferd Aiken Cura und gewann 2016 zusammen mit dem Team von La Dolfina die Argentine Open auf sechs Klonen seiner Erfolgsstute Cuartetera. Prometea brachte am 17. Prometea pèse 100 kg à l'âge de deux mois. Le Dr. Cesare Galli et ses assistants ont fait des tests avec 841 embryons reconstruits ; sur les 14 embryons viables quatre ont été implantés à la mère. Seul celui de Prometea put arriver à terme. La Texas A&M University travaillait également sur un projet de clonage équin quand les Italiens réussirent. Cette réussite fait du cheval la septième espèce animale clonée. En 2008, Prometea donne elle-même naissance à la première descendance d'un cheval cloné, un poulain nommé Pegaso, fils d'un étalon Haflinger, par insémination artificielle. Le nom Prometea est basé sur le féminin de Prométhée, titan grec qui a volé le feu aux dieux pour le donner aux hommes. (fr)

Cloning also allows for conservation of strong genetics and could be used for conserving specific equine lines that may need additional animals in the population.
