The Public Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice (German: Generalbundesanwalt or Generalbundesanwältin beim Bundesgerichtshof (GBA), lit.: "General Federal Attorney at the Federal Court of Justice") is the federal prosecutor of Germany, representing the federal government at the Bundesgerichtshof, the federal court of justice. The office of the Public Prosecutor General is located in Karlsruhe. Besides its role in appellate cases, the Public Prosecutor General has primary jurisdiction in cases of crimes against the state (in particular terrorism, espionage and treason), and offences under the Völkerstrafgesetzbuch (genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes). The Public Prosecutor General also represents Germany in certain civil and administrative cases.

Seit 2015 ist Peter Frank Leiter der Behörde. Ihm sind ein Stellvertretender Generalbundesanwalt sowie mehrere Bundesanwälte beim Bundesgerichtshof, Oberstaatsanwälte beim Bundesgerichtshof und Staatsanwälte beim Bundesgerichtshof zugeordnet. Er verfügt über circa 300 Mitarbeiter, von denen etwa 110 dauerhaft als Bundesanwälte, Oberstaatsanwälte bzw. Staatsanwälte beim Bundesgerichtshof tätig sind. Darüber hinaus unterstützen 50 vorübergehend abgeordnete Staatsanwälte oder Richter aus den Ländern den GBA. Der Generalbundesanwalt ist ein politischer Beamter. Er soll die kriminal- und sicherheitspolitischen Ansichten und Ziele der jeweils amtierenden Bundesregierung teilen und kann jederzeit in den einstweiligen Ruhestand versetzt werden. Er gehört der Exekutive an und untersteht der Dienstaufsicht des Bundesministers der Justiz (BMJ). Der Generalbundesanwalt vertritt grundsätzlich die Anklage in allen Strafverfahren, die vor den Bundesgerichtshof kommen. Er hat außerdem eine Sonderzuständigkeit für eine Reihe von Staatsschutzdelikten, die gegen den Bund gerichtet sind oder in denen die mutmaßlichen Täter grenzüberschreitend handeln. Il représente également la Fédération dans certains conflits civils. Il constitue une administration fédérale supérieure et dirige le parquet fédéral (Bundesanwaltschaft). Choisi par le ministre fédéral de la Justice avec approbation du Bundesrat et formellement nommé par le président fédéral, il siège à Karlsruhe, certains de ses services étant localisés à Leipzig auprès de la 5e chambre pénale de la Cour fédérale. La fonction a été créée en 1950 et a succédé au procureur supérieur du Reich (Oberreichsanwalt) qui remplissait des fonctions comparables sous le Reich allemand. Elle a eu onze titulaires ; , nommée en juin 2006, fut la première femme à l’occuper. Depuis le 05/10/2015 le poste est occupé par Peter Frank. (fr)

He is subject to the supervision of the Federal Minister of Justice. In 1977, then-Public Prosecutor General Siegfried Buback was assassinated by an extremist left-wing group, the Red Army Faction.
