Cuando los glóbulos rojos del feto entran en contacto con el torrente sanguíneo de la madre por la placenta, el sistema inmune de la madre trata a las células fetales Rh positivas como si fuesen una sustancia extraña y crea anticuerpos contra las células sanguíneas fetales, destruyendo los glóbulos rojos circulantes de este en el momento que los anticuerpos anti-Rh positivos atraviesan la placenta hasta el feto. - Rh disease (also known as rhesus isoimmunization, Rh (D) disease, and blue baby disease) is a type of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). HDFN due to anti-D antibodies is the proper and currently used name for this disease as the Rh blood group system actually has more than 50 antigens and not only the D-antigen. The term "Rh Disease" is commonly used to refer to HDFN due to anti-D antibodies, and prior to the discovery of anti-Rho(D) immune globulin, it was the most common type of HDFN. The disease ranges from mild to severe, and occurs in the second or subsequent pregnancies of Rh-D negative women when the biologic father is Rh-D positive. (en)
- Resusantagonisme treedt op als een resusnegatieve vrouw in verwachting is van een resuspositief kind. Als rode bloedcellen van de foetus (vooral bij de bevalling/keizersnede, maar ook bij vruchtwaterpunctie) in de bloedbaan van de moeder terechtkomen kunnen die de productie van antistoffen veroorzaken, wat bij latere zwangerschappen problemen bij de vrucht kan geven doordat de antilichamen een gevaar vormen voor de foetus.
