Trochaic tetrameter is a meter in poetry. It refers to a line of four trochaic feet. The etymology of the word Trochaic is the Greek word trokhaios, from the verb trecho, which means "I run". In classical metre, a trochee is a foot consisting of a long syllable followed by a short one; in modern English poetry, a trochee is a foot consisting of a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one. The word "tetrameter" in classical metre means a line with four metra, each metron containing two trochees, thus eight trochees in all. In modern metre it means a line with four trochees.

Da das trochäische Metrum eine Dipodie ist, also aus zwei Versfüßen besteht, hat der trochäische Dimeter vier Versfüße, er stimmt also im Prinzip mit dem ebenfalls vierfüßigen trochäischem Quaternar bzw. der trochäischen Tetrapodie (tr4) überein. In Sprachen mit akzentuierendem Versprinzip wie dem Deutschen ist das entsprechende Versmaß der trochäische Vierheber. (de)
