In dieser Publikation griff sie in eine seit Anfang der 1970er-Jahre geführte Debatte zur Evolutionstheorie zwischen Vertretern des Gradualismus und des Punktualismus zugunsten des Punktualismus ein und formulierte zugleich erstmals die heute allgemein bekannte Hypothese, dass Klimaveränderungen vor 2,5 bis 2 Millionen Jahren in Afrika zu einem beschleunigten „Artenwandel“ führten.
