Sein Forschungsgebiet ist Planetenforschung, mit dem Schwerpunkt auf die großen festen Körper im Sonnensystem, wie terrestrischen Planeten und die Monde der Gasriesen. Squyres ist Principal Investigator der Mars Exploration Rover Mission (MER). Er ist Bruder von Tim Squyres und ein ehemaliger Student des verstorbenen Carl Sagan. (de)

Ses recherches portent sur la planétologie, il s'intéresse en particulier aux corps telluriques du système solaire (notamment Mars, la Lune, les satellites joviens,...). Squyres se fit connaître du grand public lors de la mission Mars Exploration Rover. L'astéroïde (10044) Squyres a été nommé en son honneur. Il est marié et père de deux enfants. His research area is in planetary sciences, with a focus on large solid bodies in the Solar System such as the terrestrial planets and the moons of the Jovian planets.
