Çukurca (Kurdish: Çāl "ditch, pit, hole, well", Syriac: ܛܝܵܪܹܐ, romanized: Ṭyārē, Lishanid Noshan: גיאלא) is a district of the Hakkâri Province of Turkey, close to Iraq. The mayor is Ensar Dündar (Justice and Development Party). As of 2010, the population was 5283. The historical Assyrian tribe of Tyari was located in this district until the Sayfo (Assyrian Genocide). Northeastern Jewish Aramaic-speaking Jews lived here historically; most fled during the Sayfo, and the last remaining members of the community emigrated to Israel in 1951.
