Apparu dans les années 1820 à la Rugby School, le rugby se développe dans toute l'Angleterre puis en Écosse à partir de 1854. Tandis que chaque club anglais établit ses propres règles — l'unification des règles de rugby football est un enjeu majeur du XIXe siècle —, les Écossais s'alignent assez rapidement, ce qui permet une meilleure cohésion. Les Anglais organisent un premier match Angleterre-Écosse, mais celui-ci n'est pas reconnu par les Écossais, leurs représentants étant des Londoniens n'ayant parfois que de très vagues liens avec l'Écosse.
