The El Ayyat train disaster happened at 02:00 on the morning of 20 February 2002 in an eleven-carriage passenger train travelling from Cairo to Luxor. A cooking gas cylinder exploded in the fifth carriage, creating a fire which destroyed seven third-class carriages. The initial number of dead given by officials at the time was 383, all Egyptians. However, considering that seven carriages were burnt to the ground, and each carriage was packed with at least double the maximum carrying capacity of 150, this number may be greatly underestimated. W pociągu relacji Kair – Luksor o godzinie 2 w nocy zapaliło się jedenaście wagonów. Siedem wagonów spaliło się niemalże doszczętnie, pozostałe cztery – w znacznym stopniu. | - حادث قطار الصعيد 2002 كان حادث قطار حصل بالقطار رقم 832 المتوجه إلى أسوان من القهرة والذي أدى إلى مقتل 361 شخصاً. تعتبر الحادثة من أسوأ الحوادث القطارية في مصر. كان القطار رقم 832 المتوجه من القاهرة إلى أسوان، قد اندلعت النيران في إحدى عرباته في الساعة الثانية من صباح يوم 20 فبراير 2002م، عقب مغادرته مدينة العياط عند قرية ميت القائد. وقد أكّد الناجون أنهم شاهدوا دخانًا كثيفًا ينبعث من العربة الأخيرة للقطار، ثم اندلعت النيران بها وامتدت بسرعة إلى باقي العربات، والتي كانت مكدسة بالركاب المسافرين لقضاء عطلة عيد الأضحى في مراكزهم وقراهم في صعيد مصر. وقام بعض الركاب بكسر النوافذ الزجاجية، وألقوا بأنفسهم خارج القطار، مما تسبب في مصرعهم أو غرقهم في ترعة الإبراهيمية. وقام قائد القطار بفصل العربات السبع الأمامية عن العربات المحترقة، وأخطر الجهات المعنية بالحادث، ثم واصل رحلته خشية توقفه وحدوث كارثة جديدة. وأكد الدكتور عاطف عبيد رئيس مجلس الوزراء ـ عقب زيارته مستشفى العياط المركزي للاطمئنان على المصابين ـ أن الحريق اشتعل بعربات القطار بسبب انفجار موقد بوتاجاز في بوفيه إحدى العربات بالقطار، وامتدت النيران إلى باقي العربات. وقال إنه خلال نصف ساعة من الحادث انتقلت جميع فرق الإنقاذ، وعلى رأسها 45 طبيبًا من وزارة الصحة، وأضاف أن الحكومة بكامل أجهزتها انتقلت إلى موقع الحادث، ومنها 90 سيارة إسعاف مجهزة، و 60 سيارة إطفاء، ورجال هيئة السكة الحديد وقيادات الشرطة والمحليات والصحة والشئون الاجتماعية. In addition, the fire was so intense and the carriages so badly burned that many corpses had been reduced to ash. As there was no means of communication between the driver and the rear carriages, the driver did not immediately know of the fire, resulting in many people attempting to flee from the overcrowded carriages, jumping to their death. Some important Egyptians have commented that the official number of 383 dead is grossly inaccurate and was an attempt to lessen the damage done to the reputation of the government. (en)

La naturaleza dudosa del número de muertos dado radica en la ausencia de una lista completa de pasajeros; dar cuenta de los desaparecidos era casi imposible en ese momento. Además, el fuego era tan intenso y los carruajes tan quemados que muchos cadáveres habían quedado reducidos a cenizas. Szacuje się, że w każdym z wagonów mogło być nawet dwa razy więcej osób, niż przewidywała ładowność – 300 pasażerów na wagon zamiast 150. Zanim maszynista zorientował się, co się stało i zatrzymał pociąg, skład przejechał jeszcze od 2 do 8 kilometrów (według różnych źródeł). Niektóre źródła mówią, że pociąg podróżował nawet jeszcze dwie godziny od wybuchu pożaru do zatrzymania składu. Przerażeni pasażerowie wyskakiwali przez okna. Nie jest jasne, dlaczego żaden z pasażerów, którzy zauważyli pożar, nie użył hamulca awaryjnego, by natychmiast zatrzymać pociąg. Wedle oficjalnych źródeł przyczyną pożaru była eksplozja butli gazowej w jednej z kuchenek używanych przez pasażerów podczas podróży (w piątym wagonie składu).
