The strike lasted six weeks, and ended when GM conceded to union demands on wage growth and health care costs because the new contract allows GM to close three factories: the Lordstown Assembly plant, the Baltimore plant, and the Warren Transmission plant. The new contract includes agreements that "in-progression" workers now get a faster path to top pay: four years from $17 per hour to $28 per hour rather than eight, $75,000-85,000 assistance packages for workers at the three closing plants, and 4% lump sum wage payments in the first and third years with 3% base wage increases in alternating years. Tijdens de Grote Recessie hadden gesyndicaliseerde werknemers van General Motors allerlei toegevingen gedaan op hun arbeidsvoorwaarden om hun werkgever de kans te geven zich te herstellen na de financiële crisis. Algauw maakte GM echter weer winst, terwijl verloning niet mee steeg. Het personeel was ook misnoegd om de sluiting van Amerikaanse fabrieken. Amper 2 dagen nadat de toenmalige collectieve arbeidsovereenkomst tussen GM en de (UAW) ten einde liep, op 16 september middernacht, gingen zo'n 48.000 GM-werknemers in staking. De stakers werden gesteund door de Democratische presidentskandidaten Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar en . Op 16 oktober werd aangekondigd dat GM en de UAW een overeenkomst hadden bereikt. De staking eindigde echter pas na de goedkeuring door de vakbondsleden op 25 oktober. (nl)
