Akcja tej rozległej panoramy społeczeństwa indyjskiego dzieje się w 1950- 1951 roku, cztery lata po odzyskaniu przez Indie niepodległości i obejmuje takie miejsca jak Kalkutę, Delhi, fikcyjne miasto nad Gangesem Brahmpur i muzułmańskie wsie w jego okolicy.
