Acerba animi (Latin, "Of harsh souls"; also called On the Persecution of the Church in Mexico) is an encyclical of Pope Pius XI promulgated on 29 September 1932, to denounce the continued persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico. It was the second of three encyclicals concerning persecution in Mexico, including Iniquis afflictisque (1926) and (1937). The Mexican government at the time was engaging in violently anticlerical persecution of the Church, and the Pope harshly criticised the government for its past and current abuse of the Church and its faithful and chided the government for not only violating its promises to the Church made in the recent cessation of the Catholic uprising, the Cristero War, but expanding the persecution.

- Acerba animi (Latijn voor de bitterheid van de ziel) was een encycliek, uitgevaardigd op 29 september 1932 door paus Pius XI, die evenals de encycliek Iniquis Afflictisque (1926) als onderwerp de positie van de kerk in Mexico had. Door de invoering van de nieuwe Mexicaanse grondwet in 1917 was de scheiding van kerk en staat een feit. Maatregelen van de regering gingen echter verder; geestelijken werden op grote schaal vervolgd, gemarteld en vermoord. In zijn encycliek Iniquis Afflictisque had Pius XI al fel geprotesteerd tegen deze praktijken en opgeroepen tot maatregelen. (nl)

Jedná se v pořadí o druhou encykliku na toto téma po Iniquis afflictisque z roku 1926. Třetí encyklikou byla Nos es muy conocida vydaná v roce 1937. Papež v encyklice zdůrazňuje pokrok při sjednávání dohod o vzájemných vztazích (konkordáty) s jinými státy a lituje v kapitole 3, že perzekuce katolíků v Mexiku pokračuje s ohledem na článek 130 mexické ústavy, který umožňoval státu moc nad hierarchií církve, např. státní souhlas a početní limit na kněze, který vedl postupně v některých provinciích ke stavu, že 100 000 obyvatel mělo jediného kněze. Papež vyzdvihuje odvahu věřících a kléru při realizaci svobody vyznání a srovnává jejich tehdejší situaci s postavením věřících v sovětském Rusku. (cs)
