Alain Hubert (born September 11, 1953, in Schaerbeek) is a Belgian explorer. He is a certified mountain and polar guide, a civil engineer, and the founder President of the International Polar Foundation. With the Foundation and its private partners, he built and financed the construction of the scientific research station ‘Princess Elisabeth’. This station is the first ‘Zero Emissions’ station in Antarctica, designed under the spirit of the Madrid protocol system establishing in 1992 the strictest environmental rules to date for a continent through the Antarctic Treaty System.

Avec la Fondation et ses partenaires privés, il a construit et financé la station de recherche scientifique "Princess Elisabeth Antarctica". Cette station est la première station "zéro émission" en Antarctique, conçue dans l'esprit du Protocole de Madrid instaurant en 1992 les règles environnementales les plus strictes à ce jour pour ce continent géré par le Traité Antarctique. En 2010, la Fondation cède la station à l'État belge dans le cadre d'un partenariat privilégié avec la condition 'sine qua none' qu'elle en soit l'opérateur pour la maintenance et la conduite des opérations scientifiques. En 2015, le Conseil des ministres belge a décidé de suspendre sa coopération avec lui en raison d'accusations de conflits d'intérêts et d'incertitudes financières formulées par le directeur de l'administration de la politique scientifique, en décembre 2013. Ces accusations ont été depuis déclarées infondées par la Chambre du Conseil du Tribunal de 1ere instance francophone de Bruxelles, dans une ordonnance de non-lieu rendue le 5 janvier 2021. En 2016, le Conseil d'État invalide les décisions du Gouvernement. En raison de sa gestion désastreuse, la Ministre Elke Sleurs est remplacée au gouvernement par Zuhal Demir. Peu après, un nouvel accord entre l’État belge et Alain Hubert est entériné, accord qui réinstaure la Fondation polaire internationale comme l'unique opérateur de la station pour au moins huit années et Alain Hubert comme responsable de la gestion des missions antarctiques à la station Princess Elisabeth. De maximale hoogte die hij daarbij bereikte was 8580 meter (1999), driehonderd meter onder de top. In 1994 verkende hij voor het eerst het noordpoolgebied en werd alzo de eerste Belg die de noordpool bereikte. In 1997-1998 maakten Hubert en Dixie Dansercoer de langste oversteek van Antarctica. In 99 dagen legden ze, volledig autonoom en te voet, 3924 km af. In 2002 mislukte zijn poging na 66 dagen om de Noordelijke IJszee over te steken. Van maart tot juni 2007 stapte Alain Hubert, opnieuw met Dixie Dansercoer, van Siberië naar Groenland. Onderweg voerden ze herhaaldelijk waarnemingen uit op het terrein en deden ze metingen van de ijsdikte. Alain Hubert was met de door hem opgerichte International Polar Foundation de initiatiefnemer voor de oprichting van de wetenschappelijke Prinses Elisabethbasis op de Zuidpool. Vanaf 2007 tot 2015 was hij ook de eerste expeditieleider van de Prinses Elisabethbasis. In 2010 geeft de Stichting het station als donatie aan de Belgische Staat in het kader van een geprivilegieerd partnerschap met de 'sine qua non' dat het de exploitant zou zijn voor het onderhoud en de wetenschappelijke exploitatie. In 2015 besloot de Belgische ministerraad zijn samenwerking met hem op te schorten wegens wanbeheer, belangenconflicten en financiële onzekerheden. In 2016 heeft de Raad van State de besluiten van de regering ongeldig verklaard. Als gevolg van haar beheer wordt minister Elke Sleurs in de regering vervangen door Zuhal Demir. Kort daarna werd een nieuw akkoord tussen de Belgische Staat en Alain Hubert bekrachtigd, een akkoord waarbij de Internationale Polar Foundation opnieuw wordt opgericht als enige exploitant van het station voor minstens acht jaar en Alain Hubert als verantwoordelijke voor het beheer van de Antarctische missies in het Princess Elisabeth-station.
