Die Tochter des Boxers nahm bereits als Kind erfolgreich an Talentshows teil und trat am Capitol Theatre in der Revue Ten Nights in a Bar Room und den Rundfunkstationen CHRC und CKCV auf. Sie studierte in Montreal Gesang, Tanz und Schauspiel bei und Rose Ouellette und war über ein Jahr am Théâtre National engagiert. Im Esquire Club wurde sie 1942 von , einem Produzenten der CBC entdeckt und für die Shows von Lucio Agostini und engagiert. Surnommée "la chanteuse de la guerre", elle a interprété les répertoires français et américain durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, période où l'importation de disques français était presque impossible au Québec. Elle a fait découvrir le répertoire latino-américains aux Canadiens francophones et anglophones dans ses propres traductions, ce qui lui a valu un succès extraordinaire.
