Antigone cubensis, sometimes called the Cuban flightless crane, is a large, extinct species of crane which was endemic to the island of Cuba in the Caribbean. The species was originally placed in the genus Grus, as Grus cubensis, however subsequent study of the genus resulted in moving the species to Antigone in 2020. Subfossil remains were found in Pleistocene deposits in Pinar del Rio. Probably derived from an early invasion of sandhill cranes from North America, it differed from that species by, as well as larger size, having a proportionately broader bill, stockier legs, and with reduced wings and pectoral girdle indicating that it may have been flightless. Das umfangreiche Typusmaterial, das aus über 450 Schädel- und Skelettüberresten besteht, wurde im Sommer 1967 vom deutschen Paläontologen Karlheinz Fischer vom Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und seinen Kollegen von der Universität von Havanna in der Karsthöhle Pío Domingo in der Nähe des Dorfes Sumidero in der westkubanischen Provinz Pinar del Río entdeckt. Weiteres Material stammt aus der Sandoval-Höhle bei Caimito in der Provinz Artemisa, aus der Indio-Höhle bei San José des las Lajas in der Provinz Mayabeque und vom Fundort Las Breas de San Felipe in der Provinz Matanzas. Dess efterlämningar har hittats i avlagringar från pleistocen i provinsen Pinar del Rio. Troligen härstammar den från en tidig invasion av prärietrana som än idag häckar på ön. Kubatranan var dock större samt hade bredare näbb, kraftigare ben och framför allt kortare vingar vilket tyder på att den var oförmögen att flyga. (sv)
