Aristoteles Iraklis Philippidis (1915–1985) was a scholar in the field of applied mechanics, and made contributions to the mechanics of materials, especially to the theory of plasticity. He was born in Smyrna. He graduated from the Praktikon Lykeum Athens in 1932 and got Diploma Engineering degree from the National Technical University of Athens. He went to Technical University of Berlin in 1938 and made his doctoral study under the supervision of Prof. Georg Hamel. In 1939, he got his doctor degree. He was the founder and co-editor of Acta Mechanica.

| - Ο Αριστοτέλης Φιλιππίδης του Ηρακλέους (Aristoteles Iraklis Philippidis, 1915 – 9 Αυγούστου 1985), γνωστός στις ΗΠΑ ως Άρις Φίλιπς (Aris Phillips), ήταν Έλληνας ερευνητής και πανεπιστημιακός στον χώρο της εφαρμοσμένης μηχανικής. Συνεισέφερε στην έρευνα για την αντοχή των υλικών και στη θεωρία της . Ο Αριστοτέλης Φιλιππίδης γεννήθηκε στη Σμύρνη και ολοκλήρωσε τη δευτεροβάθμια εκπαίδευσή του στην Αθήνα το 1932. Πήρε πτυχίο μηχανικού από το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο. Στη συνέχεια πήγε στο , όπου ερεύνησε ως υποψήφιος διδάκτορας υπό την επίβλεψη του καθηγητή Γκέοργκ Χάμελ, και το 1939 πήρε το διδακτορικό του με διατριβή τιτλοφορούμενη Συνεισφορά στη γεωμετρία των μαζών. Συνέχισε με μεταδιδακτορική έρευνα στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Μονάχου το 1940 και στο Τεχνικό Πανεπιστήμιο του Μονάχου από το 1940 μέχρι το 1945. Το 1947 ο Φιλιππίδης εγκαταστάθηκε στις ΗΠΑ, όπου δίδαξε στο Τεχνολογικό Ινστιτούτο της Καλιφόρνια και στο Πανεπιστήμιο Στάνφορντ. Αργότερα έγινε καθηγητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Γέιλ, μέχρι τον θάνατό του σε ηλικία 70 ετών. Ο Φιλιππίδης ήταν έγγαμος (από το 1949) και είχε αποκτήσει δύο γιους.
