The Articulata hypothesis is the grouping in a higher taxon of animals with segmented bodies, consisting of Annelida and Panarthropoda. This theory states that these groups are descended from a common segmented ancestor. The Articulata hypothesis is an alternative to the hypothesis that ecdysis (the shedding of outer cuticle) is a primitive characteristic – this would place Panarthropoda in the group Ecdysozoa.

Die Gruppe wurde erstmals von Georges Cuvier 1795 bei einem Vortrag vor der Société d´Histoire naturelle de Paris als eine der Hauptgruppen des Tierreiches beschrieben (in Cuviers Konzept als eine von insgesamt vier solcher Hauptgruppen). In der Folgezeit galten die Articulata als eine der morphologisch am besten gesicherten Abstammungsgemeinschaften innerhalb der Protostomia. Erst eine molekularbiologische Untersuchung aus dem Jahre 1997 ließ den Verdacht aufkommen, dass Ringelwürmer und Gliederfüßer keine Schwestergruppen seien, d. h. die Annahme eines Taxons „Articulata“ ungültig sein könnte. Dieses Resultat wurde auf molekularbiologischer Ebene wiederholt bestätigt, so dass die Gliederfüßer heute als Teil des neuen Taxons Häutungstiere (Ecdysozoa) aufgefasst werden. (de)

Algunos, como Nielsen et. al., han corroborado la existencia del clado Articulata; de manera esquemática: Pero cada vez más estudios, tanto morfológicos (Eernise et al.), como moleculares (Giribet & Ribera) y de datos combinados (Zrzavý et al.) han llegando a la conclusión de que anélidos y artrópodos no están directamente relacionados. La presencia de metamerización en anélidos y artrópodos debe considerarse, un caso de convergencia evolutiva. Por el contrario, estos estudios propusieron el clado Ecdysozoa en el que los artrópodos muestran estrechas relaciones filogenéticas con grupos pseudocelomados, como nematodos, nematomorfos, priapúlidos y quinorrincos, por la presencia compartida de una cutícula quitinosa y un proceso de muda (ecdisis) de la misma. Los anélidos estarían emparentados con grupos que, como ellos, también poseen larvas trocoforianas y segmentación espiral del huevo (clado Spiralia), como los moluscos, platelmintos, nemertinos, entre otros.
