On 21 June 1998, Daniel Nivel, member of the National Gendarmerie, was assaulted in the city of Lens by German football hooligans during the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He fell into a six-week coma and was left with permanent disability. One of his attackers was arrested at the scene and tried in France, receiving a jail sentence of five years and being barred from returning to the country. Four others were tried in Essen, a city in their own country, and found guilty, with one being jailed for ten years for attempted murder, and the others receiving shorter sentences for serious bodily harm.

- Daniel Nivel (* 30. November 1954) ist ein Angehöriger der französischen Polizeitruppe Gendarmerie nationale, der am 21. Juni 1998 in Ausübung seines Dienstes bei der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 1998 in Lens von mehreren deutschen Hooligans angegriffen wurde. Als er schon wehrlos am Boden lag, schlugen und traten sie weiter auf ihn ein. Der damals 43-jährige Ehemann und zweifache Vater lag anschließend sechs Wochen im Koma.An den Folgen der Gewalttat leidet Nivel bis heute. Er ist halbseitig gelähmt und auf einen Rollstuhl angewiesen, auf einem Auge blind und kann nur mühsam sprechen. Er kann nichts mehr riechen und schmecken. Sechs der Hooligans wurden später zu Haftstrafen verurteilt, einer davon wegen versuchten Mordes zu zehn Jahren. (de)
