Audio Video Coding Standard (AVS) refers to the digital audio and digital video series compression standard formulated by the Audio and Video coding standard workgroup of China. Work began in 2002, and three generations of standards were published. AVS3 codec added to DVB’s media delivery toolbox.

- Audio Video Coding Standard (kurz AVS) ist ein chinesischer Audio-Video-Codec, der 2004 als nationaler Standard vorgeschlagen wurde. Die Volksrepublik China bemüht sich um die Entwicklung eigener Standards, die Kompressionsverfahren für digitales Audio und Video festlegen, um ihre technische Unabhängigkeit vom Ausland zu festigen. Dabei dürfte es hauptsächlich darum gehen, die als zu hoch eingeschätzten Lizenzgebühren an die MPEG LA für die von ihr verwalteten Standards (zum Beispiel MPEG-2, verwendet in DVD und DVB) zu vermeiden. So sollen etwa die Lizenzgebühren für ein DVD-Abspielgerät bei 2.50 $US liegen, während die Herstellungskosten der Geräte inzwischen stark gesunken sind und die Lizenzgebühren am Verkaufspreis daher schon einen empfindlichen Anteil haben. - Audio Video Standard ou AVS est un codec de compression pour le son et la vidéo dont le développement fut proposé par le gouvernement de la République populaire de Chine dans le but de concurrencer les formats occidentaux, notamment le MPEG, afin de permettre à la Chine d'augmenter son autonomie dans le secteur informatique et de réduire les coûts dus au paiement des redevances pour l'utilisation des formats propriétaires. Ce format était appelé à devenir le standard haute résolution pour l'Enhanced Versatile Disc (concurrent chinois du DVD) et sera finalement utilisé pour le CBHD (successeur chinois du HD DVD). The first generation AVS standard includes “Information Technology, Advanced Audio Video Coding, Part 2: Video” (AVS1) and “Information Technology, Advanced Audio Video Coding Part 16: Radio Television Video” (AVS+).For the second generation, referred to as AVS2, the primary application target was Ultra-high-definition television video, supporting the efficient compression of ultra-high-resolution (4K resolution and above), high-dynamic-range videos, and was published as IEEE international standard IEEE 1857.4.An industry alliance was established to develop and promote AVS standards.A patent pool charges a small royalty for terminal products (like TVs), excluding content providers and operators.
