In such circumstances, subjects can hold conversations, sit up, and even open their eyes. These acts are considered sub-conscious as most of the time the events cannot be recalled by the subject. Automatic behavior may also manifest while performing well-learned actions. In this case, the behavior becomes automatic in the sense that it does not require conscious monitoring.
