Una tesi interessante, ma non dimostrata, vuole che in realtà il termine "babbuino" non sia altro che una variante fonetica del diffuso termine popolare "babbione". Questo, a sua volta, deriverebbe dal latino "bambalio, bambalionis" avente significato di "vecchio svanito e cialtrone; imbecille": la posa e l'espressione del Sileno, in effetti, potrebbero indurre un tale caustico giudizio. A fonte está localizada ao lado da igreja Sant'Atanasio dei Greci, na via del Babuino, no rione Campo Marzio. Fontänen beställdes av påve Gregorius XIII och bekostades av köpmannen Alessandro Grandi år 1576; skulptören är dock okänd. Fontänen var ursprungligen belägen vid vid Via del Babuino, men den flyttades år 1877 till palatsets innergård. Il Babuino flyttades till sin nuvarande plats vid kyrkan Sant'Atanasio dei Greci år 1957.
