Baltic maritime trade began in the Late Middle Ages and would continue to develop into the early modern period. During this time, ships carrying goods from the Baltic and North Sea passed along the Øresund, or the Sound, connecting areas like the Gulf of Finland to the Skagerrak. Over a period of 400 years, maritime powers in the east and west struggled to control these markets and the trade routes between them. The Baltic trading system of this era can be explained as beginning with the Hanseatic League and ending with the Great Nordic War.

Der Raum erfuhr erst seit dem Spätmittelalter eine prägnante herrschaftliche Verdichtung und die Entstehung größerer urbaner Zentren. Deswegen wurde der Ostseehandel in der neuzeitlichen Geschichtsforschung lange als peripherer europäischer Ereignishorizont begriffen (im Gegensatz dazu steht der ). Diese vergangene Bewertung wandelt sich aber mit zunehmender Intensivierung der Forschungsaktivitäten. Michael North zufolge war die Ostsee in der Frühen Neuzeit Drehscheibe der Weltwirtschaft. Der frühneuzeitliche Ostseehandel basierte auf dem Austausch von Nahrungsmitteln und Rohstoffen des ressourcenreichen Nord- und Osteuropas gegen Fertigwaren des gewerblich hochentwickelten Nordwesteuropas. Die Ostsee verknüpfte verschiedene Weltregionen miteinander und war Kernraum von ertragreichen Austauschbeziehungen. Diese wurden systematisch in den verflochten und integriert.
