- In de 17e eeuw werden in verschillende Nederlandse steden wisselbanken opgericht, die het mogelijk maakten om geldtransacties uit te voeren zonder gebruik van muntgeld (dat in die tijd grotendeels uit goud en zilver bestond). De belangrijkste daarvan was de Amsterdamse Wisselbank. De op die bank getrokken wissels waren ook verhandelbaar, en kunnen als voorlopers van de moderne bankbiljetten worden gezien. (nl)
