The Battle of Iłża, one of many clashes of the January Uprising, took place on January 17, 1864, near the town of Iłża, which at that time belonged to Russian-controlled Congress Poland. A party of 830 Polish rebels, commanded by , clashed with a 400-strong detachment of the Imperial Russian Army. Poles lost 5 men, while Russian losses were much higher. The battle of Iłża was commemorated on Warsaw's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with the inscription “IłŻA 17 I 1864".

W kierunku stojącego w okolicach Iłży 3 Pułku Stopnickiego ppłk Karola Kality-Rębajły, liczącego dwa bataliony po trzy kompanie strzelców, maszerowała rosyjska kolumna pułkownika Suchonina (2 roty piechoty i kozacy). Suchonin pod osłoną lasu wyszedł na boczną drogę i niespodziewanie zaatakował z boku trzy polskie kompanie stojące we wsi Lubienia. W bitwie Polacy stracili 5 zabitych i 14 rannych. The battle began when Russian infantry and Cossacks under Colonel Sukhonin attacked three rebel companies of Polish 3rd Stopnica Regiment, which were stationed in the village of Lubienia. The Russians probably underestimated strength of rebel units, as soon after their attack, two additional Polish companies entered the battle, with two more attacking Russians from their rear. Sukhonin and his soldiers put up a fierce fight, but after some time, he was pushed towards Iłża, where Russians defended themselves in houses. As darkness fell, the skirmish came to an end, and Polish commandant Karol Kalita ordered his men to head towards Prędocin. The battle of Iłża was commemorated on Warsaw's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with the inscription “IłŻA 17 I 1864". (en)

Zaś 3 kompania pod dowództwem kpt Bezdziedy osłaniała pułk z prawego skrzydła. Wkrótce na tyłach wojsk rosyjskich pojawiła się ostatnia z kompanii (4) pod bezpośrednim dowództwem mjr Kality, która maszerowała boczną drogą i ku zaskoczeniu Rosjan wyszła na szosę. Suchonin, pomimo oporu, został zepchnięty frontalnym natarciem pięciu kompanii, a zagrożony z tyłu przez szóstą, wycofał się do Iłży i bronił się w budynkach miasta. Dalszą walkę przerwały zapadające ciemności. W tej sytuacji Kalita przerwał walkę i ruszył na Prędocin. W bitwie Polacy stracili 5 zabitych i 14 rannych. Straty rosyjskie były znacznie większe. Walki pod Iłżą zostały upamiętnione po 1990 r. na jednej z tablic na Grobie Nieznanego Żołnierza w Warszawie napisem "IŁŻA 17 I 1864" (pl)
