The Battle of Salta took place on February 20, 1813 on the plains of Castañares, north of the present-day Argentine city of Salta, during the Argentine War of Independence. The Army of the North, under the command of general Manuel Belgrano, defeated for the second time the royalist troops of general Pío de Tristán, after their victory in the previous September at the Battle of Tucumán. The unconditional surrender of the royalist troops ensured Argentine control over most of the northern territories of the former Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata.

El Ejército del Norte, al mando del general Manuel Belgrano y de Eustoquio Díaz Vélez como mayor general o segundo jefe, derrotó por segunda vez a las tropas realistas del brigadier Juan Pío Tristán, a las que había batido ya en septiembre anterior en la batalla de Tucumán. La rendición incondicional de los realistas garantizó el control del gobierno rioplatense sobre buena parte de los territorios del antiguo Virreinato del Río de la Plata, aseguró la región y permitió a los patriotas recuperar, provisoriamente, el control del Alto Perú. Po porażce w armia rojalistów dowodzona przez generała Pio Tristana zajęła stanowiska w Salcie. Siły hiszpańskie liczyły 3 600 ludzi, wyposażonych w 10 dział. W ślad za uchodzącym przeciwnikiem pod miasto nadeszły siły patriotów generała Manuela Belgrano z La Platy liczące 3 500 ludzi. Tristan ustawił swoje wojska w dwóch liniach, prawe skrzydło stanęło przy wzgórzu San Bernardo, lewą flankę osłaniała kawaleria. (pl)
