Black-glazed ware is a type of ancient Greek fine pottery. The modern term describes vessels covered with a shiny black slip. Black-glazed pottery was produced especially in the Classical and Hellenistic periods. During the reducing phase of the three-phase firing sintering of the iron-rich "clay paint" led to a shiny black glaze. Such pottery was produced both on the potter's wheel or impressed in pre-shaped matrixes. The glaze, originally in the form of a fine grained clay paint, was added on with a paintbrush on the wheel, or by dipping. Il rivestimento esterno di colore nero o bruno scuro, più o meno lucido, è presente su tutta la superficie del vaso ed era ottenuto tramite pennellatura o tramite immersione del vaso in una miscela argillosa particolarmente ricca di ossidi e idrossidi di ferro, che in fase di cottura in atmosfera riducente (assenza di ossigeno) assumeva la peculiare colorazione nera. Il raffreddamento del vaso doveva invece avvenire in ambiente ossidante, per far sì che il rivestimento rimanesse di colore nero e mantenesse un buon grado di impermeabilità. Oltre al cambio del colore, le variazioni chimiche nel materiale gli danno una consistenza e una durezza più simile alla pietra, il che ne aumenta la durata.Tecnica primitiva, la ceramica nera compare in Asia, Europa, America e Africa con esemplari datati da prima del 1000 a. C. La ceramica a vernice nera fu soppianta nel corso del I secolo a.C. dalla terra sigillata. (it)
