Bondye, also known Gran Mèt (Grand Maître), is the supreme creator god in the African diasporic religion of Haitian Vodou. Vodouists believe Bondye was responsible for creating the universe and everything in it, and that he maintains the universal order. They nevertheless deem him to be transcendent and thus inaccessible to humans, who must instead interact with spirits called lwas.

Di fatto si tratta dell'unico vero e proprio dio, in quanto tutti gli altri esseri soprannaturali sono spiriti. Il nome in creolo haitiano significa infatti "Dio" e deriverebbe dal francese Bon Dieu. - Bondye, also known Gran Mèt (Grand Maître), is the supreme creator god in the African diasporic religion of Haitian Vodou. Vodouists believe Bondye was responsible for creating the universe and everything in it, and that he maintains the universal order. They nevertheless deem him to be transcendent and thus inaccessible to humans, who must instead interact with spirits called lwas. Vodou developed among Afro-Haitian communities amid the Atlantic slave trade of the 16th to 19th centuries. It arose through the blending of the traditional religions brought to the island of Hispaniola by enslaved West Africans, many of them Yoruba or Fon, and the Roman Catholic teachings of the French colonialists who controlled the island. Bondye took his name from the French language term Bon Dieu ("Good God"). Conceptually, Bondye occupied the role played by God in Roman Catholicism and other forms of Christianity, as well as that of the supreme deity found in various African traditional religions. (en)

La figura di Bondye rappresenta il massimo vertice ed il creatore del mondo, ma viene considerato troppo al di sopra di esso per essere direttamente coinvolto nelle vicende terrene. Contrariamente ai Loa, che sono in costante rapporto con gli uomini, egli è lontano ed irraggiungibile e suppliche ed offerte dirette a lui non hanno alcuna possibilità di modificare la sua volontà. Pertanto gli adepti non svolgono alcun rito o sacrificio diretto a Bondye, né risulta che egli abbia mai posseduto qualcuno. Nonostante questo, a Bondye vengono attribuiti influssi sul tempo meteorologico e sulle catastrofi naturali, ed anche le comuni malattie che affliggono gli esseri umani vengono spesso chiamate "malattie di Bondye". In definitiva la sua volontà viene vista in qualsiasi cosa che l'uomo non può controllare, modificare o addirittura capire, ma semplicemente accettare ed adattarvisi.
