On one side, it includes a photo of the person, a personal identification number, and the card's owner personal information (complete name, gender, birth place, birth date, and others), and the user's signature. On the reverse, it may include additional information such as the date when the ID card was granted, expiration date of the ID card, and other such as their fingerprints, and all the owner's information in matrix code. Every Costa Rican citizen must carry an ID card immediately after turning 18.

Every Costa Rican citizen must carry an ID card immediately after turning 18. The cards may include several security measures, including the use of ultraviolet coating. In the near future in Costa Rica, the cédulas de identidad will also be used in the digital signature process. As of January 2020, the Costa Rican Tribunal Supremos De Elecciones (TSE) is in the planning and testing stages to move from a physical card to the use of biometrics for purposes of identification, eliminating the current plastic card. A move that would be in line with the country's goal of being carbon neutral. (en)

Cada una tiene un costo para el Estado costarricense de 8000 colones, por lo que se hacen repetidos llamados a la población para cuidarla, ya que hay informes de personas que han pedido este documento más de setenta veces. La actual numeración de la cédula de identidad entró a regir a partir del 25 de octubre de 1956 (TSE en artículo 4 del Acta No. 1358). El número de la cédula de identidad está diseñado para identificar al ciudadano numéricamente. Se compone de tres partes: la primera corresponde a la provincia donde nació la persona, la segunda indica el tomo en que está inscrita en el Registro y la tercera indica el asiento de la anotación de su nacimiento. Si el asiento tuviese más de cuatro cifras, se anotan solo las cuatro últimas. En el caso de los naturalizados, el número se compone en la misma forma, pero se anota el número ocho en el lugar de la provincia; el tomo y el asiento son los correspondientes al Registro de Naturalizaciones.
