The Cat House (Latvian: Kaķu nams) is a building situated at 10 Meistaru iela in the old town of Riga, the capital of Latvia. It was built in 1909 according to the blueprint of architect . The building is styled as medieval architecture with some elements of Art Nouveau. It is known for the two cat sculptures, with arched backs and raised tails, on its roof. It is said that the owner of the house wanted the cats to be placed with their tails turned towards the house of the Great Guild, which is nearby, as he held a grudge against its members. It was later ordered that the cats should be turned so as to face the guildhouse.

Combina un estil medieval amb elements d'art nouveau. És coneguda per les dues estàtues de gats amb les esquenes arquejades i la cua aixecada, situades a la teulada. Es diu que els gats, dues figures de coure amb aspecte enfadat, van ser dissenyats de manera que donessin l'esquena a l'edifici del Gremi de Comerciants, en actitud de menyspreu, ja que li n'havien negat l'admissió a l'amo de l'edifici. Una altra versió diu que els gats donaven l'esquena a l'Ajuntament a causa d'un disputa per la construcció de l'edifici. En qualsevol cas, l'edifici va ser objecte d'una demanda i els gats van ser reorientats. (ca)

Ben presto, però, il proprietario del palazzo fu costretto a invertire l'orientamento del gatto, il quale guarda la strada.

Taka lokalizacja rzeźb miała być swego rodzaju zemstą właściciela domu, Łotysza Plume, za odmowę przyjęcia go w poczet członków klubu. Obrażony prezydent gildii (w kręgu kulturowym Niemców bałtyckich tego rodzaju przekaz, znaczący mniej więcej „pocałuj mnie pod ogon”, był wyraźnie obraźliwy) wytoczył proces sądowy, który trwał podobno dziesięć lat i zakończył się wyrokiem nakazującym odwrócenie kotów ogonem. O dono da casa, um rico comerciante letão, encomendou a escultura após a sua adesão à câmara de comércio do outro lado da rua ter sido rejeitada. Inicialmente, o gato foi posicionado com sua cauda reta para cima voltada para a câmara. Tendo presente o insulto a que fora destinado a ser, membros do clube de comerciantes exigiram na justiça que o animal fosse desviado para uma posição menos ofensiva. Eles ganharam o caso, e o gato pode ser visto até hoje.

Den byggdes 1909 efter ritningar av den österrikiske arkitekten (1872—1945), en av pionjärerna inom jugendarkitekturen i Riga. Byggnaden är känd för två kattfigurer av koppar med krökta ryggar uppe på dess tak. Enligt legenden ville huset ägare, en rik lettisk köpman, att katterna skulle placeras med de uppresta svansarna vända mot Stora gillets byggnad tvärs över gatan, där stadens mäktigaste handelsmän höll till. Anledningen var att han förvägrats medlemskap i skrået och med denna åtgärd ville han visa sitt ogillande. Det beslutades senare om att vända på katterna.
