The wine produced here was classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. While the 1855 classification is still legally in effect, more modern classifications have been performed to reconcile changes over time. In The Liv-ex Bordeaux Classification, in which quality of Bordeaux red wine is determined by demand in terms of price, Château Durfort-Vivens is listed as a Fifth Growth. In Alexis Lichine's classification of Bordeaux wine, which is based on subjective criteria, it is a Grand Cru (Great Growth), putting it in the third group on his list. (en)

Jährlich werden ca. 70.000 Flaschen des Erstweines abgefüllt. Der Zweitwein heißt Segond de Durfort. Mittlerweile gibt es auch die Marken Relais de Durfort und Vivens Rouge. Hoewel de wijngaarden en het château aan het zuidelijke einde van Margaux liggen, moet de wijn feitelijk worden beschouwd als Cantenac, omdat de wijngaarden boven en achter liggen. De wijn kan als een robuustere Brane worden gezien, maar die de afgelopen 40 jaar grotendeels weinig opwindende wijnen heeft opgebracht. Pas sinds 1996 worden weer pogingen gedaan op het niveau van tweede cru te presteren. De lijn vanaf 2000 belooft nog meer. Durfort-Vivens is niet altijd even regelmatig in kwaliteit. In goede jaren heeft de wijn diepte en intensiteit en is goed houdbaar. Voor een Margaux is Durfort-Vivens vrij streng. (nl)
