Dotter beschreef deze techniek in 1964, samen met zijn assistent Melvin P. Judkins. Daarnaast ontwikkelde hij een techniek voor leverbiopsie door de , eerst bij dieren en in 1973 bij de mens. Een ingreep waarbij een vernauwd bloedvat via de binnenzijde van het vat wordt verwijd (angioplastiek), staat in Nederland bekend als "dotteren". (nl)

- Charles Theodore Dotter (14 June 1920 – 15 February 1985) was a pioneering US vascular radiologist who is credited with developing interventional radiology. Dotter, with his trainee Dr Melvin P. Judkins, described angioplasty in 1964. Dotter received a bachelor of arts degree in 1941 from Duke University. He went to medical school at Cornell, where he met his future wife, Pamela Beattie, a head nurse at New York Hospital. They married in 1944. He completed his internship at the United States Naval Hospital in New York State, and his residency at New York Hospital. (en)
- Charles Theodore Dotter (ur. 14 czerwca 1920, zm. 15 lutego 1985) – był pionierem radiologii naczyniowej w USA, któremu przypisuje się rozwój radiologii interwencyjnej (zabiegowej). Dotter wynalazł angioplastykę i stent wprowadzany przez cewnik, które po raz pierwszy zastosowano w leczeniu chorób tętnic obwodowych. W 1950 roku opracował automatyczny urządzenie tzw. X-Ray Roll-Film, zdolny do wytwarzania obrazów z szybkością 2 na sekundę. Dzięki temu wynalazkowi możliwe było uwidocznienie zmian w naczyniach podczas podawania kontrastu. (pl)
