Cheoyongmu is a representative Korean mask dance based on the legend of Cheoyong (처용, 處容), a son of the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea. It is also the oldest surviving Korean court dance created during the Unified Silla period. Cheoyongmu has also been considered as a shamanistic dance because it was performed to drive off evil spirits at the end of the year. It is inscribed in UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List from 2009 and enlisted as South Korean Intangible Cultural Property from 1971.

  • 처용무(處容舞, 영어: Cheoyongmu)는 대한민국의 가면극으로, 1971년 1월에 대한민국의 국가무형문화재 제39호로 지정되었으며, 2009년 9월에는 유네스코 인류구전 및 무형유산 걸작으로 선정되었다. 궁중나례로 처용 가면을 쓰고 추는 춤을 말하며, 궁중무용 중에서 유일하게 사람 형상의 가면을 쓰고 추는 춤으로 ‘오방처용무’라고도 한다. 통일신라 헌강왕(재위 875∼886) 때 살던 처용이 아내를 범하려던 역신(疫神 : 전염병을 옮기는 신) 앞에서 자신이 지은 노래를 부르며 춤을 춰서 귀신을 물리쳤다는 설화를 바탕으로 하고 있다. 처용무는 5명이 동서남북과 중앙의 5방향을 상징하는 옷을 입고 추는데 동은 파란색, 서는 흰색, 남은 붉은색, 북은 검은색, 중앙은 노란색이다.
