A coat of plates is a form of segmented torso armour consisting of overlapping metal plates riveted inside a cloth or leather garment. The coat of plates is considered part of the era of transitional armour and was normally worn as part of a full knightly harness. The coat saw its introduction in Europe among the warring elite in the 1180s or 1220s and was well established by the 1250s. It was in very common usage by the 1290s. By the 1350s it was universal among infantry militias as well. After about 1340, the plates covering the chest were combined to form an early breastplate, replacing the coat of plates. After 1370, the breastplate covered the entire torso. Different forms of the coat of plates, known as the brigandine and jack of plates, remained in use until the late 16th century.

- Der so genannte Plattenrock (auch veraltet: Spangenharnisch) entstand vermutlich im Verlaufe der zweiten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts, als der Schutz, den eine Kettenrüstung bot, alleine nicht mehr ausreichend war, vermutlich insbesondere unter den Erfahrungen des zunehmenden Einsatzes von Fernwaffen (Armbrust, Bogenwaffen). In jener Zeit findet sich oftmals die zeitgenössische Bezeichnung als Plâten. Durch die teilweise Überlappung und die starre Anordnung auf der Innenseite des Trägermaterials war sichergestellt, dass keine angreifbaren Lücken entstanden. (de)

Ein Plattenrock bestand aus mehreren überlappend angebrachten Eisenplatten, die an der Innenseite eines Überwurfes angebracht wurden, und schützte auf Grund seiner starren Form nur den Torso. Fundstücke, so zum Beispiel Plattenrock des Zacharias Haderer im Bayerischen Armeemuseum Ingolstadt oder aus Massengräbern der Schlacht von Visby (1361), geben einen guten Eindruck der Verschiedenartigkeit des Aufbaus. Als Träger kommen verschiedene Materialien in Frage, darunter Leder, oder festes Tuch aus z. B. Leinen. Spätere Nachfolgertypen, die Brigantinen oder Corrazine, weisen eher Leinen auf. Als Deckstoff kam üblicherweise ein höherwertes Tuch zum Einsatz, z. B. Seide oder Seidensamt. Die Platten wurden mittels Nieten, die entweder aus Eisen sein konnten, oder, wie auch Darstellungen nahelegten, aus Buntmetall, inwandig auf den Träger aufgenietet. Diese Niete waren von außen gut zu sehen und nicht selten mit kunstvoll gestalteten Köpfen versehen. Durch die teilweise Überlappung und die starre Anordnung auf der Innenseite des Trägermaterials war sichergestellt, dass keine angreifbaren Lücken entstanden. Ab der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts entwickelten sich einerseits die Brigantine mit deutlich kleineren Platten, andererseits der Plattenpanzer, welche im Laufe der Zeit den Plattenrock vollständig ablösten. Eine große Anzahl Plattenröcke wurde von Bengt Thordeman in den Massengräbern von Visby ausgegraben. (de)

- Zbroja kryta - wczesna wersja średniowiecznej zbroi płytowej (blisko spokrewniona z brygantyną), w postaci kaftana składającego się z metalowych płyt zakrytych warstwą skóry lub tkaniny (najczęściej aksamitu). Zbroja kryta znana była już na przełomie XII-XIII w. Podobnie jak w brygantynie, jej metalowe płyty nitowano od wewnątrz do warstw skóry lub tkaniny, bądź wszywano je między tymi warstwami. Istotną różnicą była jednak wielkość tych elementów. O ile brygantyna składała się z dużej ilości małych płytek, to zbroja kryta miała formę kilku większych zespolonych ze sobą blach. Od XIV w. płyty chroniące klatkę piersiową, zaczęto zastępować monolitycznym napierśnikiem (nadal jednak zakrywanym tkaniną). Z czasem zbroja kryta straciła na popularności na rzecz stosowanej równolegle zbroi białej w której odkryty kirys składał się z dwóch monolitycznych elementów (napierśnika i naplecznika). (pl)
