De soort leeft op levende en dode bomen in bossen, tuinen, parken en soortgelijke biotopen zoals bermen en struiken. Hij is te vinden in alle soorten loof- en gemengde bossen, maar zelden in naaldbossen. De schimmel leeft als saprobiont op verrot hout. Hij wordt ook gevonden op begraven hout en aan de voet van levende bomen. Dit laatste kan duiden op parasitisme van de schimmel aan de wortel. Hij is niet kieskeurig over de pH-waarde van de bodem. De vruchtlichamen kunnen het hele jaar door verschijnen, maar komen veel vaker voor in de milde maanden van april tot november. (nl)

The fruit bodies of the saprobe typically grow in clusters on or near rotting hardwood tree stumps or underground tree roots. Depending on their stage of development, the tawny-brown mushroom caps may range in shape from oval to bell-shaped to convex, and reach diameters up to 3 cm (1+1⁄4 in). The caps, marked with fine radial or linear grooves that extend nearly to the center, rest atop whitish stipes up to 10 cm (4 in) long. In young specimens, the entire cap surface is coated with a fine layer of reflective mica-like cells that provide the inspiration for both the mushroom's species name and the common names mica cap, shiny cap, and glistening inky cap. Los cuerpos fructificantes —o basidiocarpos— crecen en grupos cerca o sobre tocones de madera en descomposición o en las raíces subterráneas de los árboles. Dependiendo de sus etapas de desarrollo los sombreros, rojizos a marrones, pueden presentar formas ovaladas, convexas o acampanadas, y alcanzar diámetros de hasta 3 cm. Los sombreros, marcados con líneas radiales finas que se extienden casi hasta el centro, tienen estipes blanquecinos de hasta 10 cm de longitud.
