The csakan (or czakan) is a type of woodwind instrument that was popular in Vienna in the early 19th century. A type of duct flute, the csakan was originally crafted in the shape of a walking stick with a mouthpiece in the handle, reflecting the design of similar shepherds' flutes from Hungary, Slovakia and Croatia. From the 1820s, a new design appeared, which was in the shape of an oboe. Besides Heberle, the most prominent csakan performer was , who appeared frequently in concerts in Vienna from the 1820s.

La seva llargada fa que també fos conegut com a "flauta-bastó" i solia ser utilitzat com a tal per a fer passejades al camp i gaudir de la música en els moments de repòs. Ernest Krähmer (1795–1837) war es, der eine beachtliche Anzahl von anspruchsvollen Kompositionen, meistens für Csakan in Begleitung von Gitarre oder Klavier schrieb und damit stark zur Popularität des Instrumentes beitrug. Weiterhin gibt es Kompositionen für den Csakan von Anton Diabelli, Conradin Kreutzer, János Lavotta oder Johann Strauss. Der böhmische Komponist und Gitarrist Wenzel Matiegka verfasste eine Schule für das Instrument. Ebenso ist eine Stockquerflöte überliefert (Musikinstrumenten-Museum Berlin, Kat.-Nr. 4839). He was also the first to perform publicly on it, at a concert in Pest on 18 February 1807. Later that year, he also published the first music for the instrument, Scala für den Ungarischen Csakan. After the appearance of this Scala, around 400 more works for the csakan were published, including solos, duets, and pieces with piano or guitar accompaniment. Besides Heberle, the most prominent csakan performer was , who appeared frequently in concerts in Vienna from the 1820s. The czakan is a transposing instrument in A-flat.
