Cullins are a family of hydrophobic scaffold proteins which provide support for ubiquitin ligases (E3). All eukaryotes appear to have cullins. They combine with RING proteins to form Cullin-RING ubiquitin ligases (CRLs) that are highly diverse and play a role in myriad cellular processes, most notably protein degradation by ubiquitination. V lidském genomu se nachází 7 cullinů . Každý obvykle váže (Ring box) protein, jenž slouží k navázání E2 enzymu, a dále adaptorové proteiny, jež rekrutují substrátový receptor. Tento substrátový receptor váže substrát, jenž má být ubikvitinován. Culliny mohou být , tedy modifikovány navázáním proteinu (culliny jsou jediným známým cílem NEDD8 proteinu). Neddylace způsobuje aktivaci CRL komplexů, (pomocí COP9 signalozomu) má opačný účinek. Inhibiční účinek na činnost cullin-RING komplexů má i vazebný protein (cullin-associated NEDD8-dissociated protein 1). (cs)
