Vystupuje od konce padesátých let, kdy hrál se skupinou Dion and the Belmonts. Později se prosadil i jako sólový umělec a nahrál mnoho sólových alb. V roce 1989 byl uveden do Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Spolupracoval například s Lou Reedem (na Reedovo albu New York, Reed potom hrál na Dionovo albu ). På 1950-talet tog han artistnamnet Dion, och uppträdde tillsammans med doo wop-gruppen The Belmonts och bildade därmed gruppen Dion and the Belmonts.
