L'espèce-type, Duriatitan humerocristatus, a été décrite par John Hulke en 1874 sous le protonyme de Cetiosaurus humerocristatus. Le nom spécifique fait référence à la crête deltopectoral (crista) de l'humérus. L'espèce-type est basée sur l'holotype BMNH 44635, composé d'une partie d'humérus retrouvée par R. I. - Duriatitan is a genus of titanosauriform sauropod dinosaur that lived in the Late Jurassic in what is now England. The holotype specimen of Duriatitan, BMNH 44635, is a partial left upper arm bone which was found by R.I. Smith near in the lower Kimmeridge Clay from Dorset. The type species, D. humerocristatus, was described in 1874 by John Hulke as a species of Cetiosaurus and was noted as being similar to that of Gigantosaurus. The specific name refers to the deltopectoral crest, crista, on the upper arm bone, humerus. The specimen was assigned to its own genus by Paul M. Barrett, and in 2010. The generic name is derived from the Latin name for Dorset, Duria, and Greek Titan. Thomas Holtz estimated its length at 25 meters (82 ft). (en)

De enige benoemde soort is Duriatitan humerocristatus. In 2010 benoemden , en een apart geslacht voor de soort: Duriatitan. De geslachtsnaam is afgeleid van de Latijnse naam van Dorset, Duria, en het Griekse Titaan. Gatunkiem typowym jest opisany w 1874 r. przez D. humerocristatus; jego holotypem jest lewa kość ramienna oznaczona NHMUK 44635, odkryta w osadach formacji Kimmeridge Clay w angielskim hrabstwie Dorset. Richard Lydekker (1888) uznał, że do przedstawiciela tego gatunku należała też część prawej kości łonowej oznaczona NHMUK 49165, znaleziona w pobliżu miejsca odkrycia holotypu; według , i (2010) nie ma jednak możliwości stwierdzenia, czy rzeczywiście obie kości reprezentują ten sam gatunek. Hulke zaliczył ten gatunek do rodzaju Cetiosaurus (którego nazwę błędnie zapisał jako Ceteosaurus); niektórzy późniejsi autorzy zaliczali ten gatunek do rodzaju (pl)
